10 years ago when we first started coaching clients we gave them a custom meal plan and workout program to follow.
This is what people wanted. “Just tell me what to eat and do.” So that’s exactly what we did.
We laid out exactly what to eat, how much, and when. Every meal and snack was tailored to their food preferences. We even gave them a set allotment of “free calories” every day to eat whatever they wanted.
Their workout program was centered around lifting weights and doing cardio. Clients were given specific instructions on what days to train on and when, along with specific guidance on sets, reps, weight, rest periods, intensity, and duration.
The goal? Weight loss.
The result? Weight loss.
Sounds like it was effective … right?
There was one big issue though
Months or years after we stopped working with a client they were sending us emails asking to work together again. They were disappointed in themselves that they had gained their weight back and were struggling again.
So we’d work together again, and just like before, they would get the weight loss they were seeking.
At first we thought we were doing an amazing job. After all, when people worked with us they got results. When they didn’t work with us they struggled.
It took several years and a lot of honest reflection to realize we weren’t doing our job as coaches.
Our job was not to help people lose weight and become dependent on us. Our job wasn’t even to make sure people maintained the results they achieved when we worked together.
Our real job, and how we approach our coaching now, is to ensure people experience transformation and continue growing for a lifetime. Anything less is a failure on our part.
Weight loss isn’t transformation – it’s simply weighing less.
Transformation is about changing who you are on a deep level and then watching how your life permanently becomes more fulfilling.
As soon as we changed our approach from weight loss obsessed to transformation focused, the lives of our clients dramatically improved.
They started trusting themselves around food again. They became comfortable and confident in their own skin. And they started living their full life experience.
They wore clothes that made them feel good. They came out of hiding and started meeting new people. They went places and did things they were too afraid to do before. They excelled at their jobs and relationships.
The shift that changed everything
All this success was a result of a big shift in our coaching philosophy. Instead of taking an outside-in approach to weight loss, we moved to an inside-out approach to transformation.
That means we no longer ignored or bandaged over deep struggles with food and body. We stopped setting arbitrary and unsustainable calorie budgets, and we stopped reinforcing the idea that weighing less was going to solve all your problems.
Instead, we pinpointed the common struggles people have surrounding their food, body, exercise, and mind, and we helped them overcome those struggles and experience lifelong transformation.
Your ideal body is the natural side effect of healthy relationships with food, body, exercise, and mind. It’s the body you’re in when you’re no longer obsessed over food, are comfortable and confident in your own skin, and are living your full life experience.
By identifying and overcoming the apparent struggles in each core relationship (food, body, exercise, mind), you change yourself from the inside-out, permanently experience transformation, and go from frustrated dieter to healthy, happy, and fit.
