One of the first things we have people do in our program is to stop counting calories.
You might think we’re anti calorie counting based on that coaching style.
Funny thing is, I actually count calories.
So am I a hypocrite? Am I telling people to do one thing while doing another?
This is where context is so important, and why you can’t just look at health and fitness advice and assume it applies to everyone at every time.
Here is the real deal… and it’s backed up by over a decade of coaching over a thousand people.
So it’s not just some ideological viewpoint to be edgy or different – it’s what works.
There is nothing inherently wrong with calorie counting… so long as you have a healthy relationship with food.
That last part is the part everyone misses, and what determines your success with the tool.
Anyone can budget their calories for a while and lose some weight. But that doesn’t mean it worked for you.
I’ve talked to enough people who have counted calories off and on their entire life – decades even… and they’re still struggling with their body.
This is proof calorie counting does not work for you – yet.
Instead, it is one of the things keeping you stuck, as it prevents you from getting down to the root of your struggles with food and solving them.
It keeps you on the surface trying to “just eat less”, when in reality – how much you eat is a side effect of your relationship with food.
If you’re eating too much it’s because you have a dysfunctional relationship with food.
If you want to eat less, effortlessly, for life – you need to heal your relationship with food.
And calorie counting gets in the way of you doing that.
So that’s why we remove it at the beginning of our program.
Because people who join us have a dysfunctional relationship with food.
They need to heal first before calorie counting is useful.
Once healed, we show you how to use it in a productive way – if you even want to (because it’s not a requirement to achieve your healthiest weight).
Get it? Your individual struggles and where you are on your journey determine whether calorie counting would be useful.
