Diet Culture teaches us that our weight is the problem.
And this perspective is what creates so much of our struggle.
I get it though. Our weight feels like a problem that needs to be solved.
But it’s not.
And the reason is simple – our weight isn’t a problem, it’s a symptom.
You can treat the symptom if you want. After all, that’s the core strategy that Diet Culture promotes.
Eating too much (a symptom)? Eat less.
Moving too little (a symptom)? Move more.
Weigh too much (a symptom)? Lose weight.
Symptom treating is a temporary solution to a long term problem.
So what is the problem then?
Unhealthy relationships with food, body, exercise, and mind.
The dysfunction in these areas is what causes the unwanted side effects (ie symptoms) that most people are trying to treat.
But there’s a better way to treat symptoms – remove them completely by addressing the root causes of your struggles.
And the way you do that is to shift your thinking from trying to lose weight, to healing.
Healing these 4 relationships (food, body, exercise, and mind) is what addresses your core problem.
Once you heal, the symptoms don’t surface. The problem is gone – for good.
So what are you? A problem solver or a symptom treater?
