The way we set health & fitness goals is wrong.
The standard approach forces us to get overly focused on the outcome.
When this happens, it’s easy to get frustrated, as progress will never come fast enough.
You just want to skip to the end and get the results. But you can’t.
So the journey feels miserable. And you eventually give up – not because you want to, but because your behaviors aren’t sustainable.
Take weight loss, for example.
We all just want to skip to the end. We focus on losing xx amount of pounds.
Everything we do is to control that number on the scale. We slash calories, cut out enjoyable foods, and do exercise that isn’t sustainable.
So we never really settle into our behaviors. Instead, we become hyper-focused on our body, eating, and exercise.
We then live in a state of food and body obsession, when all we really want is to stop worrying about these things so much.
The solution is to not be so outcome focused.
Think of a spectrum. On one side we have the process focus. And on the other extreme we have the outcome focus.
The goal isn’t to necessarily be 100% process focused – it’s to simply move yourself more towards the process side.
This is where you’ll find more peace and success. Your journey won’t feel like a grind. And you will more naturally fall into your healthy behaviors.
This means eating in a way that meets your needs of the now – not solely for your desires of the future.
This means moving your body in a way that in enjoyable now – not solely because you want it to change your body.
Because your desired future is simply the present repeated over and over again. So focus on the now.
Make sense?
Think about where you are on that spectrum right now and how that correlates to how you’re feeling about your journey.
